Initial situation
The City of Krefeld had a fire protection development plan from 2020. The hazard situation regarding vegetation fires had changed rapidly in recent years, particularly due to climate change, leading to a corresponding need for updating and supplementing the existing fire protection development plan, also based on the IM’s forest fire decree from 2022.
Objective
Conceptual Planning for Forest and Vegetation Fire Fighting in Krefeld
Solution Approach/Process/Methodology
Workshops were conducted with various stakeholders from the municipality (fire department, forestry administration, city administration). The basic paper “Forest Fire Prevention and Forest Fire Fighting in North Rhine-Westphalia” from 2022, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Protection and the Ministry of the Interior of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, provided guidance.
During the workshops, various vegetation fire scenarios were discussed, and exemplary events that would directly affect the Krefeld city area were described.
Measures Taken
The developed objectives were compared with available resources. In this context, a comprehensive analysis of existing technical equipment as well as personnel qualifications and capacities was carried out.
A realistic assessment of gaps and deficiencies formed the basis for initiating further targeted steps.
Results / Successes / Client Feedback
For all participants, the workshop in the forest area served not only for information exchange but also, in particular, for a joint assessment of the local risk and forest structure.
