Latest insights into EMS needs planning
Training on the topic: Current findings in emergency medical services needs planning
International research on emergency medical services needs planning has advanced significantly in recent years. Particularly in the field of mathematical optimisation, there are many approaches that are used in practice worldwide.
In this four-hour online seminar, we provide an overview of the most important findings and approaches. The theoretical foundations are explained and, building on these, practical implementation options are presented.
In doing so, we focus on the following key topics, among others:
- We examine various approaches to station location planning with single or multiple coverage. Also relevant here is the definition of suitable quality indicators, e.g. incident probabilities or the survival probability considered in planning (outcome-based strategic planning).
- What advantages and disadvantages are associated with separate versus joint planning of station locations and ambulance resource provision?
- We discuss possible applications of discrete-event simulation to analyse various scenarios, e.g. with regard to proactively taking into account an increase in incident numbers that is already foreseeable at the time of planning. In this way, we open up solution options to stay ahead of the situation and thus ensure that future resource provision is not dependent solely on retrospective incident activity.
- The seminar provides numerous impulses and ample opportunity to discuss them, also with regard to possible practical challenges.
